Jeremy Hawksley writes to Chris Huhne

Dear Mr Huhne

Many congratulations on being re-elected to the House of Commons, and on being appointed as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

Your department has a most critical role in the new Coalition Government’s programme.

The Oil Fired Technical Association (OFTEC) represents companies involved in the oil fired heating and cooking sector (e.g. AGA, Kingspan and Worcester Bosch).   Also we administer a Competent Persons Scheme for oil fired technicians under licence from the Department of Communities and Local Government.  Currently there are just under 10,000 people on our register.

We have been closely involved with DECC on the Renewable Heat Incentive and I would urge you to keep this incentive as proposed in place.  OFTEC and others have worked to create a new bio-heating fuel that can be used as a ‘drop-in’ alternative to fossil fuels in the 1.4 million homes that currently run on oil in the UK.  This new fuel could have a significant role to play in reducing the carbon emissions of households off the gas main, but we need the right incentives from Government for this to be taken up.

I would welcome the opportunity to brief you and your Ministers and wonder whether we might be able to arrange such a meeting in the next few months?

Wishing you every success in your new position.

Yours sincerely

Jeremy Hawksley

Director-General
